BC Seiners

This page is to document BC seine boats including some historic boats. I have given a bit of info on each one but please do add your comments with more stories of builders, owners or crew of each boat. For BC seiners that I have missed please sent pictures to me that you have the rights for or that you have taken. They will go on a separate page. It would be nice to get a pic of each boat. please credit the site and Alan Haig-Brown if you want to use any.

I love this website…I have been looking for commercial fishing boat photos from Alert Bay from way back in the early 70s..
I Remember the vessel owned by Jimmy Sewid, (Twin Sisters) Anna M owned by Ozzie Sewid, Twin Islands owned by John Onley…and on and on….
I remember when the place was booming with fisherman……
    Thanks for the photos..

Do you wish to add “Table Seiners” ?

    • alanhaigbrown says:

I would put them up on the Historic photos page as most table seiners that were still active in the early ’60s became drum seiners.

    Hi Allan,
The Lillian Belle is now registered in the USA. Owned by a couple from California.
We are the current owners/caretakers of the Gordon M No.1.
Glad to see the picture. The boat now resides at Syd’s Marina in Annasis Channel receiving the care a classic deserves.
Have a short history of the boat with some blanks I could send if you are interested.
Thanks for all the photos and research,

  11. I’m looking for photos and info on the Nakade built seiner Merry Chase. I’d particularly like to know anything about when she was repowered with a Cat 334 and who her owner was when the wheelhouse was adapted. That work might have been done by Mario Ursich or someone who knew his innovative style.

I was wondering if anyone knew of my step dad
Einar Matus Dahl and if he was ever a crew member of the Alaska Queen 11. He was a vary special person in my life. My real father was drowned on or near the heckate straits his name was Herbert Valpy on the Invercan 11 now the Northern Monarch. If anyone has any info on either please e-mail me. Thank you Bev.

    • Tony Petersen says:

Hi Bev. I was just looking thru some of the history in the bc fishing industry and saw your message from a long time ago. My name is Tony Petersen and I believe the
Einar you are looking for fished halibut with me and my dad on the Judy Lee in the late 80’s. He was a big ,loud, tobacco chewing gentle guy fun to be around. I believe he went back to Norway. Please feel free to email me to see if we are talking about the same person.

Looking for any photos/ articles on Northview which sank in the early ’60’s in Georgia Straight. My grandfather was on board and I would love to get a photo of the boat.

    • alanhaigbrown says:

Hi Andrew: My book Fishing for a Living, Harbour Publishing, 1993 has pictures.

    • Cheri Carr says:

My grandfather was suppose to be on that boat too but for unknown reasons wasn’t. He fished for your family for many years. My grandmother tells me that it was the westview that sank but her memory isn’t what it use to be. I also have been looking for info on the sunken boat. Did you find any info?

    • Jennifer Wilson says:

My grandfather was on the boat too. He was the one they found, too late unfortunately. My brother has the original newspaper with a picture of the boat. Pretty big picture, I think it was the cover news article.

  15. barry roman says:

  16. John Frank jr says:

Can you find any pictures of a seine boat called the Princess Cherri it was a 50 foot wood seiner fished on the west coast, my father John Frank sr bought the seiner from Barney Williams Sr in the early 80’s. Then sold the boat to man named Michelle.

  17. Rick Mutch says:

It’s great to see these boats. I deckhanded on Oceanaire for years starting in 1979, then on Ocean Summer (great to see it on this site) for more years. Ocean Summer is owned by Rick Tanaka out of Port Hardy, but he pulled the drum off it and moved it to Alaska as a table seiner. So sad those great years are thing of the past on the BC coast.

  18. Kelvin Campbell says:

Great to have a look back at all these fine vessels. The names bring back one memory after another. Have some pictures of the original Western Ranger own by Merv Campbell. She sits on the bottom somewhere outside Bull Harbour. I will dig them up and forward them on.
And thanks greatly for the memories.

    Where is the Elling K?
Fred Leland was apparently one of the best fishermen and top producers on the coast. I believe it was sold to Mcmillan when he retired and he bought a troller just to stay in the business but hire a man to run it .Fred apssed away two years ago but his Son Mike is alive and well the last time I saw him 7 years ago.
