Cape Fairweather was built by the South Bend Boat Shop in 1971 now hailing port is Cathlamet WA. I wonder what is the story behind this boat.

Eric Gilbertsen, AKA Swede owns it. Poor boat. Eric, one of the best wet fish seiners on the coast owns it and has let it go to rot. Admittedly, it was not a seiner when he bought it and was in poor shape then, but Swede has been fishing sardines and squid using a bad ass boat from Bellingham and has transcended the usefulness of this old wood boat in the salmon seine fisheries of Alaska. Nice lines from good old growth fir, toooooo bad … Wood!
Reply if you really want to know story behind this I will yell you.
I am the half owner.story is we leased it to a guy that trashed it and completely screwed the cape. happy to report the fairweather wil be getting a proper overhaul and be back in SE AK in next two seasons.
Great. She’s a beautiful boat.
I know it looks rough but this is probly the best built wood seiner around. whish is sad that it has turned in to this
another note worthy comment. my dad eric “swede” gilbertsen fished this boat successfully for many years in SE AK before thois happened. I worked on this baot as a teen….did not always look so sad
I fished this boat in the 70s when it was classic crab boat. Formerly named John David. I’m friends with the original owner and we want to find it. We ran the boat from Westport to Cordova in 5 days. She was fast and stable. Great sea boat. Let me know her whereabouts.
